{"id":3943,"date":"2016-03-25T16:43:16","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T16:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/?page_id=3943"},"modified":"2025-05-31T05:16:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T05:16:48","slug":"floortime-dir","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/?page_id=3943","title":{"rendered":"Floortime \/ DIR"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\">What is DIR\u00ae ?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0 \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">DIR\u00ae has a deep foundation in the science of human development and can sound very technical at times.\u00a0 However, it is also very simple.\u00a0 It is a way to understand our children and each other that builds connections, understanding, love, communication, and engagement.\u00a0 Through this approach, the true potential of each person can be discovered.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 DIR is the Developmental, Individual-differences, &amp; Relationship-based model that has become the foundation for understanding child development and providing support and intervention that helps children reach their fullest potential.\u00a0 The\u00a0DIR\u00ae model is also a framework that helps clinicians, parents and educators conduct comprehensive assessments and develop educational and\/or intervention programs tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of each child.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0DIRFloortime\u00ae is the application of the DIR model into practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0While the DIR model helps us understand and promote the positive development of all children, DIR and DIRFloortime are most commonly utilized with children with educational, social-emotional, mental health, and\/or developmental challenges.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0DIR\/Floortime has become most widely known as an approach to support children with with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).\u00a0 You can read more about DIR and ASD in many books including &#8220;Engaging Autism&#8221; and &#8220;The Child with Special Needs&#8221; by Drs Greenspan and Wieder.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\">What is the difference between <\/span><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\">DIR\u00ae and Floortime<\/span><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\">\u00ae and how are they related ?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Floortime\u00ae (or DIRFloortime\u00ae) is a specific technique to both follow the child\u2019s natural emotional interests (lead) and at the same time challenge the child towards greater and greater mastery of the social, emotional, and intellectual capacities. (additional reading: Floortime,What it is and what it isn&#8217;t).\u00a0 With young children these playful interactions may occur on the floor, but go on to include conversations and interactions in other places.DIRFloortime\u00ae emphasizes the critical role of parents and other family members because of the importance of their emotional relationships with the child.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0The DIR\u00ae Model, however, is a comprehensive framework which enables clinicians, parents and educators to construct a program tailored to the child\u2019s unique challenges and strengths. Central to the DIR\u00ae Model is the role of the child\u2019s natural emotions and interests which has been shown to be essential for learning interactions that enable the different parts of the mind and brain to work together and build successively higher levels of social, emotional, and intellectual capacities.
