{"id":4905,"date":"2016-04-27T13:37:14","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T13:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/?page_id=4905"},"modified":"2025-05-31T06:39:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T06:39:27","slug":"teacch-with-linda","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/?page_id=4905","title":{"rendered":"TEACCH with Linda"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\">Workshop 5:\u00a0TEACCH<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4509\" src=\"https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LOGO-ATC-FN-1-1-300x84.png\" alt=\"LOGO-ATC-FN-1\" width=\"504\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LOGO-ATC-FN-1-1-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LOGO-ATC-FN-1-1.png 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This workshop is developed by the concept of the \u201cCulture of Autism\u201d as a way of thinking about the characteristic patterns of thinking and behavior seen in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\"><b>ACCESSING THE CURRICULUM<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Why might these tasks be difficult for a pupil with ASD?<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have a go at a task they don\u2019t like<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Imagining what a Roman soldier might say<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thinking of ideas for their story about penguins<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sitting still and attending during long teacher talk carpet sessions<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Holding a sentence in mind<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following instructions in PE<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Handwriting<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Working independently for longer periods on creative work<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Understanding calculation strategies or number concepts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">May have a great PECS snack time, opps to make requests and daily TEACCH activity but during day to day provision,\u00a0 lots of issues, hard for child to engage.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In order to help them access, we need to know what they find difficult and why.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Look at these tasks.\u00a0 What would be the issues?<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Choose one \u2013 agree issue \u2013 think how you could adapt.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Difficulties generalising, grouping together concepts \u2013 concrete experiences<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Holding in mind \u2013 use visual jottings, whiteboards, colour coding<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Work independently \u2013 make task predictable<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\"><b>MAKING LEARNING IRRESISTIBLE<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Think of a task your child doesn\u2019t engage in.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because of neurological differences, children with ASD won\u2019t work to please their teacher or parents.\u00a0 Other children will be quiet when primary teacher says Shh! They also might not infer how their disruptive behaviour makes it hard for others to concentrate. They might not infer that other children won\u2019t play with them because they are always shouting.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They may also find it hard to regulate their emotions, so trying to get them to do a task they don\u2019t like could lead to them getting really angry or upset.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\"><b>USING REWARDS<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Beware of the child who <em>&#8220;only ever wants to play on the iPad&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you explored messy play, walks around the school grounds, playing with toy cars?<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When there are tasks in the day that you know the child won\u2019t intrinsically like, tell them how long they have to do it for and what will come afterwards.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you tried using Now and Next to tell the child what\u2019s happening after that\u2019s fun. Use the sand timer\/stop watch.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\"><b>POSSIBLE EXAMPLES<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An envelope of strips of paper in their tray that they write their name on and post in your in tray during every afternoon registration<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A computer task e.g. using Clicker to order a sentence, or using a spell check to edit and improve<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reordering a cut up sentence that they have written<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Using colourful semantics strips to write about a picture<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An opportunity to interview one of their peers about the topic they are studying \u2013 practising asking a simple questions e.g. \u2018What do you know about\u2026?\u2019<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0066bf;\"><b>SET UP INDEPENDANT TASKS<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4823 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/autismtrainingcenter.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"Picture5\" width=\"51\" height=\"56\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When during the day might your child have time to practise independent skills?\u00a0 Maybe for the last half hour of a topic lesson, during register or during part of music.\u00a0 Think of a skills that your child would benefit from practising e.g. writing their name, ordering a sentence.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How could they practise it?\u00a0<b>Describe a TEACCH task to your partner that would help.<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Workshop 5:\u00a0TEACCH This workshop is developed by the concept of the \u201cCulture of Autism\u201d as a way of thinking about the characteristic patterns of thinking and behavior seen in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). &nbsp; ACCESSING THE CURRICULUM Why might these tasks be difficult for a pupil with ASD?
