Illustrations are just as important as the text in a social story, but be mindful that they do not convey the wrong message.<\/span>

Which image would best fit the sentence \u201cIt is safe to walk to school with my friends\u201d?<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

What is a Social Story<\/b><\/span>\u2122<\/strong>?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

    A social story helps children understand the world around them.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    It is a true story<\/strong> that describes a situation<\/strong> (e.g., a supply teacher), a skill<\/strong> (e.g., taking a shower), or an idea<\/strong> (e.g., what is a mistake).<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    It is researched, written, and illustrated<\/strong> according to ten defined criteria.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    It is not written to change children\u2019s behaviour<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    It does not tell children what they think or feel<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    It does not instruct<\/strong> them on what they must do.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    “I will not run away\u2026”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

    Use:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    “Why it is important to stay with adults on a trip.”<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Title and Introduction<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Clearly state the topic:<\/span><\/h4>\n

    “If I lose my toy, people can help.”<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Body<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Explain or describe the situation:<\/span><\/h4>\n

    “Mum or Dad knows how to find my toy.
    Mum or Dad and I will try to think and look.”<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      My class is going to the beach on Tuesday.<\/span>
      We\u2019ll ride on a bus to the beach.<\/span>
      Many children have fun when they visit the beach.<\/span>
      Beaches are made of sand and they are by the sea.<\/span>
      To stay safe, all children listen carefully to the teacher about what to do on the beach.<\/span>
      I sometimes feel scared of the sea, but Miss Turner will let me sit far back on the beach with her.<\/span>
      That way, we can all be safe on the beach and have fun.<\/span><\/h4>\n
