Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren

 

Autism Program developed the concept of the “Culture of Autism” as a way of thinking about the characteristic patterns of thinking and behavior seen in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

 

TEACCH tells the child :

  • What do I do?

  • Where do I do it?

  • How much do I have to do?

  • How do I know when I’m finished?

  • What do I do next?

A structured environment

  • Clearly organised environment

  • Uses correct level of visual supports: objects, photos, symbols or words

  • Work station

  • Work system (baskets, stacked trays)

  • Examples and templates

  • Within task schedules

 

Structured Learning

  • Visual timetable: supports children to know what is coming next. Can be used to support a child to anticipate surprises.

  • Workstation: quiet distraction free area where child can work independently on tasks.

  • TEACCH tasks: activities to support independence or teach new skills that then become independent tasks.
